Impact of disasters
Briefly presents data from the past three years on floods in Brazil, wildfires in California and Australia, earthquakes in other parts of the world, damage caused by hurricanes, and war refugees, highlighting the scope and urgency of post-disaster housing solutions.
Floods in Brazil (2021-2023)
Brazil has experienced frequent flooding in recent years, especially in 2021 and 2022. In January 2022, Brazil's southern states of Brasilia and Minas Gerais experienced severe flooding that killed at least 130 people. Infrastructure and housing were severely damaged in several cities.
● Affected Communities: More than half a million residents were affected.
● Number of homes lost: About 100,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.
● Urgent needs: Although recovery efforts have begun, infrastructure and housing are still not fully restored in most areas, and temporary post-disaster housing solutions are urgently needed.
California Wildfires (2020-2023)
Wildfires continue to rage in California, especially in 2020 and 2021. 2020 was one of the worst fires in California history, with hundreds of injuries and dozens of deaths.
● Affected Communities: More than 200,000 residents were evacuated.
● Number of homes lost: About 10,000 homes were completely destroyed.
● Immediate needs: Post-disaster reconstruction has been slow, and many families who lost their homes are still in temporary housing and urgently need transitional housing solutions.
Australian Bushfires (2019-2020)
In 2020, Australia experienced unprecedented large-scale bushfires that destroyed large areas of forest and thousands of homes.
● Affected Communities: About 180,000 people were affected.
● Number of homes lost: About 3,500 homes burned down.
● Urgent need: Thousands of people are still waiting for transitional housing after the fire. Reconstruction has been slow and rapid and effective temporary housing solutions are urgently needed.
Earthquakes and hurricanes
● Earthquakes: The 2020 Izmir earthquake in Turkey and the 2021 earthquake in Haiti caused massive loss of life and damage to homes.
● Affected communities: The Izmir earthquake affected 200,000 people, and the Haiti earthquake affected 500,000 people.
● Number of homes lost: About 100,000 homes were damaged.
● Immediate needs: Temporary accommodation and post-disaster reconstruction support are urgently needed in these areas.
● Hurricanes: The United States and the Caribbean experienced an extremely severe hurricane season in 2020, with Hurricanes Laura and Marfa causing widespread home damage.
● Affected Communities: More than 1.5 million residents were affected.
● Number of homes lost: About 60,000 homes were completely destroyed.
● Urgent needs: A large number of affected communities are still not fully recovered from the disaster, and there is an urgent need to provide temporary housing and financial support for reconstruction.
War refugees
In addition to natural disasters, war has also led to a large number of refugees. The war in Ukraine, the war in Syria and conflicts elsewhere have caused massive population displacement.
● Affected Communities: Approximately 103 million people worldwide have been affected by conflict as refugees or displaced persons.
● Urgent need: These refugees are in urgent need of shelter and temporary accommodation solutions. International humanitarian aid agencies and governments are rushing to provide post-disaster shelter assistance.
The urgent need for post-disaster housing solutions.
● Temporary housing needs: After the disaster, many families are still displaced and in urgent need of transitional housing.
● Reconstruction difficulties: The recovery process has been delayed in many areas due to the lack of adequate funding and resources.
● Advantages of modular housing: Modular, containerized temporary housing provides a convenient, fast and scalable solution for post-disaster resettlement, which can meet large-scale resettlement needs and play an important role in the post-disaster reconstruction process.
